Dopamine or Hobby?

Dopamine or Hobby?

In a world where a person is identified by labels and symbols such as, how many followers and likes they receive from various social media platforms rather than who they are as an individual person, can have a profound impact on their employability in an era that is a digital savvy world.

According to Simon Sinek’s argument that there are four factors which contributes to the Millennials who are struggling in the workforces are, Parenting, Technology, Impatience and Environment. What the millennials really want to have, is a job that makes them happy and that they are able to make an impact in the world no matter small or big. Also, Sinek’s mentions that due to the fact that they (Millennials) were told in their early childhood years that ‘they could have anything they wanted’ but, unfortunately this is not true in a real corporate world where they care more about numbers than what their employees want and need and there for “there is a whole generation growing up with a low self-esteem”. To boost their self-esteem, they turn to different types of technology and to various social media platforms. Researchers and scientists have discovered that social media platforms and our phones releases a chemical called ‘Dopamine’ which is the same chemical that are used and found in drugs and alcoholic addicts.

Simon Sinek

There are a lot of people who agrees with Simon Sinek’s statements including me but unfortunately there some who don’t agree such as, John Smart a blogger and an author. John Smart argues that as this may be true to some but not all Millennials face the same issue. According to him, the real reason behind the Millennials unemployability is way more complex than what Sinek describes. The most important social conditions are inequality and plutocracy.

Based on my experience as a Millennial, I agree with both Simon Sinek and John Smart as both have great points to discuss about why us Millennials can’t find perfect jobs which suits us and or be satisfied with our current jobs. In my opinion finding a job and being happy with the job or position you have can be very difficult in this day and age, because first of all the employers does not care about how many educational degrees you own, what matters to them is that you should have a lot of experience in different fields so that you are able to provide more support to your colleagues and bring in more money for the corporation. Secondly, we all know that after a hard and stressful situation at work or university we need a bit of energy and encouragement to boost our self-esteem and our happy mood, and that’s where technologies come into action. For each one of us Millennials these technologies vary in usage, for example some individuals may turn to social media platforms for a dose of their daily ‘Dopamine’, while others like me turn to ‘TV’ shows such as Kdrama or more commonly known as Korean or Asian Dramas.
